Water Babies Ireland North West

Baby swimming with Water Babies is an exciting, enriching experience for both you and your little one. Not only does it teach vital life skills, but it also enhances the way babies and toddlers learn other skills, too. No one else reaches our high standards of professionalism, and no one else works harder to make sure you and your little one feel happy and safe. And we always incorporate lots of bonding, fun and socialising, so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby!

Classes across North West Ireland are run by Jamie & Lisa Cobbe, whose two passions – besides family – are music and water. An accomplished guitar and sax player (though not both at the same time), Jamie indulged his love of music before switching careers to work with adults at a local disability organisation, where swimming played a large part in their development programme.

Meanwhile Lisa (‘a great singer’, Jamie says) was carving out a career as an archivist at the National Library. Both keen swimmers and surfers, friends introduced them to Water Babies after their son Leon was born – and he’s now joined in the pool by little sister Marley and brother Dexter. ‘We loved it from the word ‘go’’, recalls Lisa, ‘especially watching the babies’ advancement as the weeks progress. So running our own lessons was the natural next step.’

The wonderfully enthusiastic Ingrid is the friendly voice in the office, while a team of highly qualified teachers completes the Water Babies crew. They’d love to hear from you so why not give them a call? Or check out the banter on the Water Babies Galway Facebook page.

June Bank Holiday Weekend

We are swimming in all venues on the June bank Holiday Weekend except for St Gabriels on Sunday , The Maldron Limerick Sunday and Monday and Salthill Hotel on Monday

Autumn Term starts from 24 August

Classes will be open for Bookings in July.    Places are limited and fill up fast, we take payment in advance over the phone by card to confirm your place.  Places go on a first come basis.  You do not need to attend a taster class to book on. We can hold you a place if you need to think about it for a couple of days.

Babies do need to wear the special swim shorts in the classes, which we call a happy nappy, they ensure nothing leaks out of the disposable swim nappy while they are in the pool.  You can get them through us when you book on and we will bring a selection of sizes to your first class along with your Welcome pack which contains a lovely Journey book so you can chart your babies journey through Water Babies. Babies also wear wetsuits in the classes and we have them at the pool for you to borrow every week.  If you want to have your own wetsuit for your baby you can also get them through us.

Why We Love What We Do

We run structured and progressive courses for babies and teach water safety, water confidence and underwater swimming. Babies can start our lessons from birth in a hydrotherapy pool (Galway and Limerick) and 11/12 weeks in all other pools. Our only rule is that they have to be under 13 months when they start.

Our terms are 10 weeks long and each class is 30 minutes. Our beginner packages include the 10 lessons, and complementary attendance at our underwater photoshoot at the end of the term (prints/products are not included and cost extra) you also get a lovely keepsake sticker book to document your journey through the programme in your welcome pack.

Water Wobble Tips!

If you are looking for some more information about the Water Wobbles, blogger 'The Dadventurer' has written a very informative piece about his tips for getting through the wobbles. You can read more here.

Some of our top tips on coming through the Water Wobbles include:

  • By arriving early to your class, your little one can watch the other babies swimming and having fun in the class before theirs.
  • Bring your little one to a pool outside the classes and when you are in the pool, focus on the skills that your little one enjoys doing.
  • Persistance - it is very important to attend as many classes as you can even though you will be tempted to give up. Our teachers are used to little ones going through the Water Wobbles and will support you every step of the way until your little one comes through this phase.

If you would like a bit more information about what the Water Wobbles are and how to get through them, we have penty of information available in our office. We also have teachers on hand to talk you through this developmental stage. If you would like more information please do give us a call on 091 388256 or send us an email at surfing@waterbabies.ie.

Water Babies Swimming Survey Report

The results of the Water Babies swimming survey were astounding with over 59% of parents saying that they were not confident swimmers, 4% being afraid of water and 5% never having learnt to swim. Read our full survey report by clicking here. summer safety campaign

To launch Water Safety Awareness Week, Water Babies in association with Irish Water Safety and sponsored by Glohealth have created a Water Safety Awareness postcard for parents. Pick up your postcard at Water Babies classes week beginning May 26th and cards will also be available at selected stores nationwide.
Water Babies is working closely with Irish Water Safety, the statutory body established to promote water safety in Ireland, to educate parents and change behaviour to prevent drowning and water related accidents. By following these guidelines parents and carers can minimize the chances of a tragic incident befalling their child this summer and all through the year:
Actively supervise young children around water
* Parents must keep an eye on their children at all times – they can be easily distracted chatting to other parents, reading a newspaper or talking on the phone.
* Supervising adults should be in arms reach of children under five so that if a child slips underwater, they can be pulled to safety immediately
* The adult watching must be able to swim and not afraid to jump in the water.
* If leaving, even momentarily, take your child or designate a known adult to supervise – never leave an older sibling in charge around water.
Be safety conscious at the poolside
* Make sure there is a qualified lifeguard in attendance before you or your children enter a public swimming pool.
* Check where the rescue equipment and lifeguards are.
* Do not swim in a swimming pool which has cloudy pool water or where you can’t see the pool bottom
* Save the local emergency numbers on your mobile phone.
Flotation devices are not life preservers
* Toys and inflatables are often unstable and therefore a hazard.
Do not swim at beaches with large waves, a powerful undercurrent or no lifeguards
* Find out where the lifeguards are and learn water symbols and flags indicating current beach conditions. Please follow their advice, available at Irish Water Safety’s website, www.iws.ie
Stay sober
* Drinking can impair your supervision and swimming skills – especially when combined with the mid-day heat.
Learn BLS (Basic Life Support)
* Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may provide the seconds needed to prevent death or brain damage.
Teach your children these water safety rules:
* Always swim with others, never alone
* Do not push or jump onto others or participate in any dangerous behaviour in a swimming pool – ie horseplay, wrestling, running, jumping and dive bombing – it might result in injury.
* Do not dive into water. Diving into insufficient water depths can cause face, head and spinal injuries and even death
* Know what to do in an emergency and where to get help. Call 999 or 112.
* Make sure everybody wears a lifejacket when boating or fishing that is age and size specific and has a correctly fitting crotch strap.
Contact your local Water Babies office for your free water safety postcard! Or check out www.iws.ie for more water safety advice.
