Water Babies Little Heroes 2024

We're absolutely thrilled to announce that 14 inspiring babies and children from across Ireland have been honoured at the Water Babies Little Heroes Awards this year.                                                                                

We have unveiled heartwarming tales of how swimming and playing in water have become transformative for our babies and toddlers, helping them in overcoming health challenges, enhancing their development, and bringing joy to their lives and their families'. Despite special needs and serious illnesses, many of our Water Babies Little Heroes have demonstrated an astonishing amount of resilience and courage, defying the odds from their earliest years.

Water Babies Little Heroes winners for 2024 are:  Aurora Borza (Age 3) from Dublin, Theo Murphy (1 year) – Dublin, Maisie Gallagher (10 months) – Dublin, Kabir Kaushal (4 years old ) – Dublin, Ronnie McNulty (2 years old) – Dublin,  Rachel Nolan (2 years) – Kerry, Mary-Kate Sullivan (15 months)  -  Cork, Jack & Ryan Linehan  (Ages 4 & 3 years )  - Cork,  Alex Murphy (Age 4) – Kilkenny, Rían Barry (2 years) – Waterford , Fiadh Maher (17 months) – Kilkenny, Adam Slomian (2 years old) – St Gabriel’s Limerick, Sorcha-Rós Nic an Rí (10 months) – Galway and Bodhi Murphy (Age 6 months) – Clare.

While we recognise the numerous physical benefits of introducing babies to swimming at a tender age, our Little Hero Awards shed light on the extraordinary resilience and achievements of those born with unique challenges. Witnessing these remarkable little ones thrive in Water Babies lessons, surpassing expectations and reaching milestones once deemed unattainable, fills us with overwhelming pride and joy.  At Water Babies, we are immensely proud of our little heroes and the dedicated teachers who support, encourage, and champion them every step of the way.  Our little heroes journey in the water is not just about physical growth, but also about emotional resilience and personal triumphs.

Meet Little Hero Aurora

Aurora was nominated by her Aunt Stefania – Stefania swims with her son Nico in the same class as Aurora. "It's been 8 years since I joined the Water Babies world and I haven't looked back since. It has been incredible to see both my sons progress in the water. Learning the most crucial skill anyone could learn. Although I truly feel every little water baby is a true little hero in their own special way, I can't express how much water babies has helped my niece, Aurora on her journey." 

Despite being born with the rare Mosaic Triploid condition, Aurora has defied expectations by walking at two and half years and speaking. Thriving in her Water Babies lessons, she has progressed from blowing bubbles to standing on the floating mat.  Though her journey may be slower than others', she’s a very determined toddler.  It's this remarkable resilience that makes Aurora a true hero and deserving recipient of a Little Hero award.

Meet Little Hero Maisie

Ten Month old Maisie Gallagher, has shown remarkable resilience and progress, earning her a place among the Little Heroes. Despite facing challenges from her very birth, including seizures leading to a lengthy hospital stay and a diagnosis of the rare CDKL5 gene disorder, Maisie's spirit remains undaunted. 

Attending weekly Water Babies classes at Junction 6, Maisie has thrived under the guidance of her compassionate instructors despite her vision impairment and developmental delays.  Each week, Maisie grows stronger, both physically and sensory-wise, benefiting immensely from the therapeutic effects of the water. Maisie's calm demeanour in the pool and her willingness to adapt to challenges inspire everyone. 

With the support of her dedicated caregivers and the community services, Maisie continues to defy expectations, making strides in her aquatic journey. Her courage, resilience, and remarkable progress make her a deserving recipient of the Little Heroes Award.


Meet Little Hero Theo

One year old Theo Murphy was born prematurely via emergency C-section, he faced a myriad of complications and underwent life-saving surgery within days of birth.  His initial months were spent battling through various health challenges.

Despite the rocky start, Theo's parents enrolled him in Water Babies classes at Junction 6, recognising his affinity for water. While initially wary of new environments, Theo persisted through good weeks and bad, using the swim positions to improve his head control and neck strength. 

Under the guidance of his teacher, Suzanne, he found solace and encouragement, adapting exercises to suit his unique anatomy. Swimming not only strengthened his body but also facilitated social interactions, providing a gateway to normalcy amidst his complex journey. Theo's unwavering determination and progress in the face of adversity make him a deserving candidate for Water Babies Little Heroes Award.


Meet Little Hero Kabir

Kabir was born in January 2020 amidst the onset of a global pandemic and quickly became a beacon of hope and strength for his family. Though swimming was not a skill his parents possessed, they were determined to nurture the life skill in Kabir.

As soon as restrictions lifted, Kabir embarked on his aquatic journey with Water Babies in Blackrock, starting at 9 months old.  Amidst personal hardships, including the loss of two grandparents in India, Kabir's bond with his father flourished through their shared love of the water.  

Over the past three years, Kabir has blossomed into a true water baby, inspiring his father to take swimming lessons himself. Their cherished moments in the pool have become a testament to their enduring bond, one they hope to cherish for years to come.  On a recent holiday in India, they were in a hotel pool, and Kabir said "I like this pool, but water babies pool is warmer"!!


Meet Little Hero Ronnie

Laura Kavanagh started Water Babies back in May 2022 and she believes its the best decision she’s ever made. Ronnie was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia at 5 weeks old and the family’s whole word turned upside down.  

Following life-saving surgery in London at the tender age of 6 weeks, he has faced each challenge with unwavering courage, proving himself to be a true fighter.  

Given his condition and compromised immunity, there were uncertainties about his ability to participate in activities like swimming. However, with the approval of the medical team at Crumlin Children's Hospital, Ronnie started with Water Babies. 

Swimming has not only aided in his physical development but has also played a crucial role in shaping his character, instilling confidence, and fearlessness in him.  Ronnie's unwavering joy and boundless energy in the pool have touched the hearts of his teachers and he loves swimming with his friend Barra.  As he continues to collect badges and milestones in his swimming journey, Ronnie is a true Little Hero.


Meet Little Hero Alex

Four year old Little Hero Alex Murphy shines brightly as a Little Hero in his swimming journey at the Ormonde Hotel in Kilkenny, under the guidance of Sandra. Despite facing health challenges that initially delayed his start in swimming, Alex's determination and resilience have propelled him forward. 

Dealing with hypermobility syndrome and chronic low muscle tone, he navigates the pool with admirable strength and perseverance. Swimming has become more than just a recreational activity for Alex; it's a sanctuary where he can exercise and build essential muscle and strength in a safe environment. 

The positive impact of swimming on his day-to-day life is evident and acknowledged by his occupational therapist.   With each session, Alex's confidence grows, and his infectious smile upon leaving the pool reflects the joy and fulfilment he finds in swimming. Water Babies has not only been a source of support but also a catalyst for Alex's growth and development, for which his family is profoundly grateful.


Meet Little Hero Rían

Two year old Rían Barry’s journey to becoming Little Hero is nothing short of extraordinary. Born prematurely at 33 weeks with Spina Bifida, he embarked on his aquatic adventure with Water Babies at just 5 months old (3 months corrected).  

From his very first lesson, Rían's love for the water was evident, and his excitement before each session is palpable.  With each lesson, he has grown in confidence, eagerly embracing underwater swims and mastering new skills. The techniques he learns in the water have seamlessly translated to improvements in his mobility, such as using the "monkey monkey" skill to help him take his first steps on dry land.

Rían's weekly swimming lessons play a crucial role in his physiotherapy routine, contributing significantly to his strength and coordination.  Notably, his balance, core strength, and hand-eye coordination have shown remarkable progress week by week.  Despite the distance, Rían's family prioritises his swimming lessons, often driving two hours from Cork to Waterford for their Sunday morning sessions.  With the classes filled with joy and excitement, each 30-minute lesson flies by, leaving Rían stronger, more confident, and undoubtedly deserving of the title of Little Hero.

Meet Little Hero Adam

Little hero Adam was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after birth.  His parents were initially taken aback, but they were determined to provide him with the best opportunities. Adam's journey with Water Babies began when he was just a few months old.  Recognising the therapeutic benefits of swimming and hydrotherapy for Adam's low muscle tone, his parents embraced his aquatic adventures wholeheartedly.

Through his weekly Water Babies Classes, Adam has not only strengthened his body but has also honed various water skills, guided by the patient and exceptional teaching of Yvonne. Despite taking a bit longer to grasp certain concepts, Adam's progress is evident as he absorbs knowledge from his fellow little swimmers and his dedicated instructor. His love for music during lessons and the incorporation of Lamh signs have further enriched his experience, enhancing his communication and understanding.

Adam's confidence in the water knows no bounds, as he fearlessly dives into underwater swims with ease – earning him nickname of "our little fish" at home. Moreover, his swimming journey has had a profound impact on his Mum’s water confidence, as Mum Naomi has confronted her own fears alongside him. With each lesson, Naomi is growing more comfortable in the water, inspired by Adam's bravery and determination.    Adam embodies the true essence of a Water Babies little hero, inspiring us all to dive fearlessly into life's adventures.


Meet Little Hero Sorcha-Rós

Little Hero Sorcha-Rós Nic an Ri was born with the rare genetic condition Prader-Willi syndrome and significant low tone at birth, Sorcha-Rós began hydrotherapy at just 5 months old, showing early signs of enjoyment in the water.  

This year, she embarked on her Water Babies journey and has thrived beyond expectation. Despite her initial struggles with head control, Sorcha-Rós has made remarkable progress, confidently holding her head up and actively participating in every class with enthusiasm. Her infectious joy, evident in her constant kicking and happy chatter, brightens every session.   

Sorcha-Rós's resilience and strength serve as an inspiration to us all, demonstrating that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Despite her challenges, Sorcha-Rós is truly a water baby at heart, excelling in every class.

Meet Little Hero Fiadh

Little Hero Fiadh was born with Down syndrome however that has never stoppered her as she embarked on her remarkable journey with Water Babies at just 10 months old in Kilkenny's Ormonde Hotel.  Fiadh’s early months were marked by challenges, including open-heart surgery to repair her AVSD and a lengthy ICU stay in Crumlin Hospital. Despite these hurdles, Fiadh's resilience, and spirit shine through in the water. Following in the footsteps of her older sisters, Fiadh's love for swimming has only grown since she started Water Babies in September 2023.    Notably, her strength and core muscles have seen significant improvement, thanks to her regular sessions with Water Babies.  With every splash and giggle, Fiadh's joy in the water is evident, her smile a testament to the therapeutic benefits of swimming for her low muscle tone.  Through her determination and infectious spirit, Fiadh exemplifies what it means to be a Little Hero, inspiring all those around her with her courage and resilience.

Meet Little Hero Rachel

Rachel has emerged as a true Little Hero through her remarkable journey in the swimming pool. Rachel has been a regular water baby at Aquila in Killarney, Co. Kerry, under the guidance of her beloved teacher, Louise since she was 3 months old.  

With 11 badges earned, Rachel's swimming prowess is nothing short of extraordinary, as she confidently swims alongside older children.  And Rachel has become a source of inspiration for her family, particularly her mother. Overcoming her own fear of water, Rachel's mother has gained confidence in the pool and they now enjoy swimming as a family.   

Rachel's infectious joy, coupled with her love for the songs and skills practiced in the pool, has not only transformed her own life but has also enriched the lives of those around her, making her a true Little Hero in every sense of the word.


Meet Little Hero Mary-Kate

Little Hero Mary Kate Sullivan attends Water Babies in Clonakilty, Co. Cork every Monday, accompanied by her proud mother, Sarah.  At just 15 months old, Mary Kate has not only forged lasting friendships but has also embarked on a journey to master the invaluable skill of swimming. 

Despite facing developmental challenges, including delays in crawling and rolling, Mary Kate’s determination knows no bounds. Swimming and regular physiotherapy sessions have been instrumental in her progress and  journey towards crawling.  Her radiant smile and eager greetings upon seeing her teachers reflect her deep affection for Water Babies and the joy it brings her.

Meet Little Hero Bodhi

Little Hero Bodhi Murphy is currently making waves at Water Babies in Woodstock Ennis at just 6 months old. From the moment he entered the world, Bodhi's connection with water was undeniable, bringing him comfort and relaxation amidst the challenges he faced. Born half of a twin, Bodhi's journey has been marked by both joy and loss, as his sister Willow was sadly born sleeping. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Bodhi emerged as a beacon of hope, defying the odds and captivating his family with his fighting spirit.

Water Babies has been a lifeline for Bodhi and his family, offering solace and healing during times of grief. Through the joyous moments shared in the pool, Bodhi has not only found immense happiness but has also brought his family together, providing a sense of purpose and excitement. His love for the water knows no bounds, and each class brings new milestones and achievements, filling his home with laughter and chatter.    Bodhi Murphy is truly a Water Babies Little Hero, reminding us of the power of love, resilience, and the joy found in the simplest of moments.
