Holiday time is nearly here – have a fantastic summer! Don’t forget to keep swimming over the break. 😊
We’ve listed our top tips for summer swimming. Stay safe and see you soon!
✔️ Try to keep up the routine of your weekly swim over the summer break. Check your local pool for open swims.
✔️ Check the temperature of the pool to see if you need a little wet suit – many are UV50 so double up as sun protection too!
✔️ Keep it fun in the pool this summer but do try to build in some of the skills from your classes into your splash time. e.g. on our backs, in the pool, hold on, ring a rosie, humpty dumpty, twinkle twinkle.
✔️ For those splash happy toddlers, try to balance the mega fun jumping in with swimming skills too. Use it as an incentive to practice other skills....ok we’ll do another jump in after we do some kicking, tiger arms, blowing bubbles/face in, or chase a duck/fish/ball....keep it fun, safe...and good luck!!
✔️ Don’t forget the holiday swim this summer for older babies & toddlers – once you both get the hang of it we guarantee it will become a fun pool time favourite.
✔️ Your toddler loves to see you under the water with them. So get those goggles on and give them hi-5’s, kisses or grab a dive stick together under the water this summer.
✔️ Outside of the pool, practice bubbles in the bath, name ready go at hair washing time, holding on in the shopping trolley seat....just keep reinforcing the word associations.
✔️ We all love a day on the beach and your older baby or toddler will love a short splash in the surf but bear in mind that it’s too cold and salty for babies under 6 months. Stay in your depth, keep swim times short, avoid inflatables, and keep hold of your little one at all times!
✔️ All of the toys we use in the class including woggles & bubbas can be purchased from our website so you can practice your little ones favourite skill during the summer.
✔️ Even if your little one has taken a dislike to the woggle or bubba recently in class, getting familiar with them outside of the class setting (even just as another toy in the toybox) often helps them fall (back) in love with them in the water.
✔️ Always actively supervise your children while they are in, on, or near the water. It is vitally important that any adult nominated to watch the child must be able to swim and is not afraid to jump in. Never leave an older sibling to watch younger children.
✔️ If you must leave, even for the shortest time, take your child with you or designate a known adult to supervise children around water – never leave an older sibling to watch younger children.
