We’re proud to say that Water Babies teachers are among the best-trained baby swimming teachers in the world, and they're all Irish Water Safety or Swim Ireland qualified! Our baby programme is endorsed by England's national governing body for swimming, Swim England, and ours are the only teachers who can obtain Swim England's highest teaching qualification for under 5s.
Local teachers with world-class training
Many of our teachers are local parents themselves (and have completed the course with their own children), so understand exactly what you're going through. They’re trained to tune in very carefully to the needs of both you and your baby; this is one of the most magical times in people’s lives so we work incredibly hard to enhance it.
Some of our lovely teachers
Becoming a Water Babies swimming teacher
Our selection and training processes are rigorous. It takes a great deal of training and dedication to be a fully-qualified Water Babies teacher, so we really put them through their paces and it’s not for the faint-hearted! The bar is set very high, and not everyone passes. And, as you’d expect, they’re all DBS-checked. But we believe our incredibly high standards go a long way towards keeping your child as safe as possible.
Our teachers are fully up-to-speed with the various stages in baby and child development. Part of their intensive training involves learning to read babies’ and toddlers’ reactions in minute detail, enabling us to maintain their trust and confidence. Just ask a Water Babies teacher about the moro reflex, or different tones of crying, and you’ll soon realise there’s a lot of professional knowledge in that blue top!
That’s why you can trust us to take the very best care of you and your little one. We won’t entrust your baby (or our reputation) to anyone less than the best!
The training process
Potential teachers start with a series of skills assessments and interviews, before progressing onto the Water Babies teacher training programme.
Before even dipping a toe in the water they embark on 6 weeks of online learning, before then shadowing a qualified teacher. Next step is our 7 ½ day residential Teacher Training course, which consists of 6 full days in the pool and 1½ days of theory work.
They then teach at least 22 lessons under supervision, followed by 6 independently assessed practical exams (2 with babies, 4 with toddlers). There’s also more online learning, including child development, stroke development and lesson planning. Finally, they take a life-saving qualification, which includes paediatric first aid, and a child-protection workshop.
It doesn’t end there
Initial training is just the beginning: once they’re qualified, our teachers undergo continual assessment. They must keep up their continuing professional development with Water Babies, and as part of their annual review they’re assessed in the pool at least twice a year.
